European carmakers pehle hi US ke tariffs or China mein intense price competition ki wajah se pressure mein hai. Ab unke liye thoda relief aa skata hai, because India or European Union ek trade agreement sign karne ja rahe hai, jisme cars par import duty kaafi reduce ho jaayegi. Reuters ke according, is deal ke baad EU mein build cars par tariff 110% se reduce ho kar 40% ho jaayega. Ye India ke usually tightly controlled automobile market ka ab tak ka sabse big opening hoga European brands jaise Volkswagen or Renault ke liye.
Ye move overall ek positive step maana ja raha hai, but analysts keh rahe hai ki tariff cut sirf thoda bahut hi door open karta hai, because market pe abhi bhi domestic manufacturers or Asian rivals ka hi most of the control hai.
European brands continue to be marginal players
Industry data ke according, India ke passenger vehicle market mein European carmakers ka share abhi 3% se bhi less hai. Mostly market Suzuki Motor, Tata Motors or Mahindra & Mahindra ke paas hai, ye 3 jointly around 2/3 total sales control karte hai.
India world ka third largest car market hai, US or China ke baad, jahan every year around 44 lakh cars sell hoti hai. But itni massive market hone ke in spite, historically India ke market kaafi protected raha hai, because heavy import duties ki wajah se foreing build cars ko import karna discourage kiya jaata hai.
"Abhi production ka scale zyada large nahi hai or sales bhi sirf tens of thousands mein hai, so European brands ke paas grow karne ka kaafi scope hai. But competition itna tough hai ki moving forward isn't an easy," according to analysts.
Concentrating on premium limits volume potential
"Industry experts ka kehna hai ki tariff reduce hone ka benefit zyada premium carmakers ko milega, mass market companies ko utna nahi. Europe se jo export haote hai, wo mostly premium cars ke hi hote hai. Volume ya mass segment ke liye abhi bhi kaafi challenging hai." Germany ki automotive research group CAM ke stefan Bratzel ne kaha.
Unhone ye bhi add kiya ki Indian buyers ke liye most important hota hai affordability, reliability or low running cost, or yahi wo areas hai jahan Japanese or local brands kaafi strong rahe hai. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R jaise models, jo Japan ke compact "kei car" segment se inspired hai, aaj bhi slaes charts pe dominate kar rahe hai.
Luxury brands are seen se primary beneficiaries
Analysts ka believe hai ki Porsche, Audi or Mercedes-Benz jaise luxury carmakers ko tariff cut ka mostly benefit hoga, especially un brands ko jo cars fully built units (CBUs) ke form mein import karte hai.
"40 percent tak reduce karne se European luxury brands zyada competitive ho jaayenge," Warburg Research ke analyst Fabio Hoelscher ne kaha. But unhone ye bhi bola ki profits ka effect immediate nahi dikhega, thoda time taken hai. Saath hi, global uncertainties jaise US ki trade policies, short term mein gain ko thoda slow kar sakti hai.
Volkswagen Group, jiske under Audi, Porsche or Skoda aati hai, ne bola ki India unke liye 'kaafi strategically important' market hai, or wo agreement ka business impact evaluate karega. Mercedes-Benz ne kaha ki reduce tariffs both countries ke carmakers ke liye beneficial honge, whereas BMW ne is par koi comment nahi diya.
The potential for long-term growth remains robust
US ke high import tariffs or China mein slow hoti growth ki wajah se global car makers ab India ko apna next big growth engine assume kar rahe hai. Expect kiya ja raha hai ki 2030 tak Indian car market 6 million cars annual ke around reach karega, matlab more than one-third ka jump.
Deal ke under, India ne reportedly kuch limited EU-made cars (jo €15,000 (Rs. 16.39 lakh) se above priced hai) par tariffs less karna agree kiya hai, or time ke saath ye rates or reduce ho kar around 10% tak aa jayenge.
ING ke research analyst Rico Luman ne kaha ki EU-India trade deal medium term mein European carmakers ke liye ek big opportunity ban sakta hai. Unka kehna hai ki Indian car market abhi bhi early stage mein hai, matlab growth ka kaafi strong potential abhi baaki hai.
Abhi immediate effect maybe na hit kare, but analysts ka believe hai ki agar demand aise hi grow hoti rahi, then in future European carmakers India mein local manufacturing expand kar sakte haior apni presence or strong kar sakte hai.
