Why Mahindra is moving from pure EVs to Hybrid SUVs

Mahindra is reportedly exploring strong hybrid and range extender technology for its future SUVs as demand for practical electrification rises in India.

Why Mahindra is moving from pure EVs to Hybrid SUVs
    Areeb Khan

Mahindra future SUVs ke liye multiple hybrid powertrain options explore kar rahi hai, jisme range-extender EVs or strong hybrids bhi include hai, According to Autocar India, Yeh mave highlight karta hai ki poori industry ab ek broader shift ki taraf ja rahi hai, jahan different segments mein BEVs ke saath hybrid or other electrified technologies ko balance karne par focus increase kar rahi hai.

Mahindra ne pehle estimate kiya tha ki FY2028 tak EV penetration 20-30% tak reach kar sakta hai, jab company ne apne INGLO born electric platform par 1 billion dollar se zyada invest karne ka commitment diya tha. Isi platform se ab tak XEV 9e, BE6 or XEV 9S jaise models aaye hai. But last financial year mein company ki total sales sales ka sirf around 9% part hi EVs ka tha. Isse yeh clear hota hai ki market abhi electrification ke different phases se go through ho raha hai, or isi wajah se company ko zyada flexible powertrain options ki need hai.

Internal project codes W613 or W623 ko Mahindra ke upcoming hybrid SUV program se linked maana ja raha hai. Inmein se W623 ke 2028 ke around launch hona expected hai, or yeh ek coupe style SUV ke form mein aa sakti hai.

XEV 9e range extender hybrid being assessed

Mahindra abhi reportedly INGLO based products ke liye range extender technology ko study kar rahi hai, or maana ja raha hai ki XEV 9e (internal code W623) un pehle models mein se ek ho sakti hai jise evaluate kiya ja raha hai. Normal hybrid se different, range extender setup mein petrol engine ka main work battery ko charge karna hota hai, na ki directly wheels ko power dena. Isse car ka EV jaisa driving experience maintain rehta hai, saath hi range anxiety ka tension bhi kaafi reduce ho jata hai.

Sources ke according, Mahindra ne aise applications ko lekar technical studies or testing par work start kar diya hai. At present INGLO platform ke liye 2 engine options evaluate kiye ja rahe hai, ek 1.2 litre or second 1.5 litre unit hone ki possibility hai.

However, ek born EV platform ko hybrid use ke liye adapt karna kaafi significant re-engineering ka work hota hai, because dedicated EV platforms starting se engine, gearbox, exhaust system, extra cooling hardware or other additional components ko fit karne ke liye design hi nahi kiye jaate.

Mahindra ko packing, thermal management or crumple zones ko bhi rethink karna padega. Is process ke liye kaafi extensive R&D, testing or fresh crash safety validation ki need hogi, especially jab combustion se related components introduce kiye jaate hai.

XUV 7XO strong hybrid also under study

INGLO based range extender projects ke saath saath, Mahindra future SUVs ke liye apne existing ICE platforms par strong hybrid technology ko bhi evalute kar rahi hai. Expect kiya ja raha hai ki XUV 7XO un first models mein se ek hogi jise yeh setup milega, or yeh hybrid SUV 2027 ke around launch ho sakti hai.

XUV 7XO, Mahindra ke W601 monocoque platform par based hai. Agar isme strong hybrid system aata hai, toh SUV small distances ke liye sirf electric power par chal sakegi, or jab need hogi tab combustion engine bhi directly wheels ko power dega. Simple language mein kahein so yeh kuch-kuch Toyota Hyryder or Maruti Grand Vitara ke hybrid setup jaisa work karega.

Why automakers are reconsidering EV strategies

Mahindra ka yeh move global automotive industry mein ho rahe ek bade shift ko highlight karta hai. Kaafi manufacturers jaise Stellantis, Mercedes Benz, Ford or Honda ne bhi EV adoption expected level se low rehne ki wajah se apni EV investment ko ya toh slow kiya ya phir strategy ko dobara adjust kiya hai. Industry mein aise conversions abhi bhi kaafi rare maane jaate hai, because mostly born EV platform starting se combustion engines ko focus mein rakhkar design hi nahi kiye gaye the.

Carmakers ke liye most biggest challenge yeh hai ki future ke electrification targets or current market reality ke between balance kaise banaya jaye. India ke passenger vehicle market mein abhi EV penetration around 4.25% ke around hai, jo industry ki pehle wali expectations se kaafi low hai. Wahin hybrids gradually more popular ho rahe hai, because buyers better fuel efficiency chahte hai bina poori tarah charging infrastructure par depend kiye.

Mahindra future mein upcoming Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) rules ko meet karne ke liye hybrid technology ka bhi use kar sakti hai, saath hi apni strong SUV lineup par trust banaye rakhegi. At present iski kaafi SUVs diesel focused hai or unmein diesel ka dominance zyada hai.
