Can 72,000 Public Chargers Accelerate EV Adoption in India?

With just 29,000 public EV chargers in India today, the plan to add 72,000 more under PM E-Drive scheme by FY28 raises the question: can expanded charging infrastructure overcome "range anxiety" and significantly boost EV adoption beyond just scooters and three-wheelers?

Can 72,000 Public Chargers Accelerate EV Adoption in India?
    Areeb Khan

India ka EV market grow toh kar raha hai, but adoption abhi bhi kaafi slow hai, especially cars, buses, or two-wheelers mein. NIti Aayog ki report ke according, India ke 3-wheelers segment ka more of half of the pie ab electric ho gaya hai, par baaki categories still `peeche chal rahi hai. Global EV penetration 2024 mein approx. 16.48% thi, whereas India mein sirf around 7.66% hi thi.

proper charging facilities ki kami or usse hone wali range ki tension abhi bhi EV adoption ke liye ek major rukawat hai.

Government isko takle karne ke liye PM E-Drive scheme laa rahi hai, jisme FY28 tak scheme end hone se pehle, 72,000+ public charging stations lagane ka plan hai. Budget around Rs.2,000 crore ka hai, or focus mainly cities or highways pe hoga.

2025 mein total two-wheelers ka approx. 6% electric the, whereas cars mein sirf 5% hi electric thi. Buses bhi around 5% electric thi, or medium-heavy trucks toh 1% bhi nahi the very less.

Nomura Research Institute ke Ashim Sharma ne 2 December ko Mint ko bataya tha ki agar charging infrastructure har jagah easily available ho jaaye, toh electric vehicles ka adoption kaafi increase ho sakta hai.

Mint dekh raha hai ki aaj ka EV ecosystem kaisa chal raha hai, government ki strategy kya hai, or kaunse gaps decide karenge ki India ka EV dream successful hoga ya nahi.

Why are charging station essential fo the EV ecosystem?

EV basically batery pe chalti hai, jo uske moving parts ko power deta hai. Aur jan battery khatam ho jati hai, car ruk jaati hai. Yeh kaafi logon ke liye concern hai, isliye abhi bhi bahut log petrol ya diesel cars choose karte hai, because unhe beech raaste battery khatam hone ka darr hota hai, jise log range anxiety kehte hai.

Public charging points ka hona bohot important hai, specially long trips ke liye or un vehicles ke liye jaise cars or buses jinke liye zyada charging chahiye.

Do different types of Charger exist?

2 types ke chargers hote hai, ek slow AC charger or ek fast DC charger.

First is slow AC chargers, usually 3.3 kW wale, zyada use hote the e-rickshaws or small electric scooters ko charge karne ke liye. Inse ek small 3.5 kWh wali battery ko charge karne mein kaafi hours lag jaate the.

India ne ab officially Combines Charging System Type 2 (CCS2) ko public charging stations ke liye standard bana diya hai. Cities mein public DC chargers usually 30-60 kW par chalte hai, whereas highways par yeh power 60-180 kW hoti hai. CCS2 pehle se hi Europe ka standard hai or zyada tar golbal EV brands wahi use karte hai, isliye India ke liye bhi yeh option kaafi sahi or practical lagta hai.

How many chargers are there in India?

Home chargers ka exact number alag se track nahi hota, because woh usually vehicle ke saath hi mil jaate hai. Par August tak India mein 29,000 se thode zyada public EV charging stations the, yeh Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry ka data hai.

Yeh charging network future mein kaafi grow hone wala hai. Heavy Industries Ministry Rs.2,000 crore allocate karne wali hai, so that PM E-Drive scheme ke under 72,000+ public chargers lagaye jaa sake, woh bhi state governments or central PSUs ke saath milke.

Two government oil marketing companies ne interest dikhaya hai charging infrastructure lagane mein, is scheme ke under yeh baat Ministry ne 2 December ko Lok sabha mein batayi.

2023 ki CII study ne estimate kiya tha ki India ko 2030 tak approx. 1.32 million EV chargers ki zarurat hogi, because zero-emission vehicles ki demand tezi se grow ho rahi hai. Market intelligence firm Mordor Intelligence ke according, India ka EV charging station market abhi  $46 billion dollar ke aas paas hai, or 2030 tak yeh  $122 billion tak pahunch sakta hai, matlab approx. 21.57% CAGR ke rate se grow hoga.

    Budget and feasibility analysis

EK charging station ke 2 main parts hote hai:

Upstream infrastructure matlab woh wires or connectors jo grid se electricity draw or supply karte hai.

Downstream infrastructure yani EV charging equipment, jo directly car se connect hote hai.

Normally EV charger (EVSE) lagane ka cost around Rs.8-10 lakh hota hai, but jo upar ka infrastructure hota hai, woh kaafi factors par depend karta hai. jaise charger main grid se kitna door hai. Aur ek or massive expense hota hai land acquire karna, jahan charger lagna hai.

PM E-Drive scheme ke under, Government mostly upstream charging infrastructure ka expense bear karegi. Baaki cost charge point operators ya phir charging station lagayage, woh cover karenge.

Agar chargers Government-owned place par lagne hai, Government poora 100% cost cover karti hai, upstream infrastructure ka bhi or EV charger (EVSE) ka bhi. But agar chargers public-use areas jaise sirports ya public parking mein lag rahe ho, toh wahan government 80% upstream infrastructure or 70% EVSE ka expense bear karti hai.

Baaki public locations par, jaise city roads, waha Government sirf upstream cost ka 80% hi cover karti hai.

Agar yeh incentives claim karne hai, toh interested state government or central PSUs ko heavy industries Ministry ke paas ek proper plan ke saath jaana hoga. Is plan mein yeh sab details honi chahiye, kitne chargers lagne wale hai, kitni land chahiye hogi, kaunse vehicle segments in chargers ko use karenge, or yeh chargers operate kaun karega, state government, PSU ya phir private charge point operator.

Ministry pehle in proposal ko check karke approval degi, uske baad hi procurement process start hoga.
